HELP WANTED
I want to make Matrix more accessible to everyone. If you see anything that could be improved, please check out the contribution page!

Quick Start

This section covers the basics you need to get started with Matrix.

What is Matrix?

Matrix is a messaging protocol, like email.
There's no single app you install to "use Matrix."
Just like email, you will need to:
1: Sign up with a provider
  2: Install a messaging client
  3: Log in!

1: Signing up with a provider

In Matrix, providers are called homeservers.

Just like email providers, your homeserver:
  - Will affect your network speed
  - Will determine your upload limits
  - Can access your unencrypted data
(Most data in Matrix is encrypted.)

You can make an account on any homeserver and still talk to all of your contacts. Just like someone with a Gmail account can email a Yahoo email.

You do not need to choose a server yet, continue to step 2.

2: Installing a client

Since Matrix is just a protocol, you can use any client to start messaging people! All clients support text-chat, but some may offer additional features.

Popular options:
  - Element (the default client)
  - Commet Chat (similar to Discord)
  - Cinny (text-chat only)

If you don't know what to pick, choose Element! It fully supports calls and has a mobile app!

Install a client and proceed to step 3.

3: Logging in

You should now see a screen to create an account or sign in.

By default, your homeserver is matrix.org. It works well, though very popular servers can be slower.

If you would like, you can explore other options here

Make an account on your chosen homeserver. You're now successfully using Matrix!

4: Learn More

Matrix can feel different from platforms like Discord, but it doesn’t have to be harder. It just gives you more choice and freedom.

Why Matrix?

This section goes over why Matrix is a better alternative to other upcoming platforms.

Sustainability

Matrix is an open, federated protocol. This means that anyone can run a homeserver, so there’s no single point of failure or single company that the whole network depends on.Matrix stays sustainable because no single company controls the network, the protocol, or who is allowed to participate.

Self-hosting ≠ central control

Some platforms allow self-hosting but remain centralized in practice. This means that if that company changes direction or shuts down, the ecosystem breaks.

Free, always.

The Matrix protocol defines core features. A single company cannot unilaterally force the whole network to adopt paid gates for fundamental functionality.
